A private cinema is not a list of equipment. It is a building inside a building, defined by proportion, mass, structure, and the pursuit of silence.
Private cinema design, engineering and installation. United Kingdom, Italy and worldwide.
We begin with architecture because it is the only honest starting point. We engineer the room as the instrument. Everything else is simply a component.
Cinema Buro is a private cinema design and engineering practice, founded in 2025 by Peter Aylett, Ben Goff, Christiaan Beukes and Maurizio Conti. Born from the partnership between Cinema Lusso in the UK and Officina Acustica in Italy, we combine technical leadership with precision manufacturing to design, build and verify reference-grade private cinemas for clients around the world.
Every space is engineered from first principles, then measured and verified against agreed acoustic and visual targets before handover.
This is cinema as architecture: designed with restraint, crafted with care, and proven by measurement.
The engineering is the design, and the design is the engineering. There is no boundary between the two, only rooms of exceptional beauty, emotional impact, and measurable performance.
Our principals have won five CEDIA awards, including the 2022 Global Home Cinema award. Peter Aylett chaired CEDIA RP22, and Christiaan Beukes was its technical author. See our recognition →
We've challenged the status quo of engineering and design. We've written the book on it, and keep delivering the exceptional.
The room is designed as an instrument before a single component is chosen. Proportion, mass and structure set the ceiling for everything that follows.
A low noise floor is a design material. We control isolation, resonance and airflow so the only thing you hear is the film.
Every project is engineered to an agreed level, validated against objective metrics and verified before handover. No guesswork.
Our clients value their privacy, and we protect it completely. Most of our work is under NDA. We publish a project only with the client's express permission, and show the rest in person, at Foundry.
Designed to CEDIA RP22, from first intentions to final calibration.
No two projects share a timeline. A larger commission typically runs 24 to 36 months, from the first conversation and laying down of intentions, through design, to a finished and verified room. A smaller, more contained project can complete in 3 to 6 months. What never changes is the sequence.
We hold the same discipline whether the engagement lasts a season or several years; every project moves through the same seven stages, in the same order, at whatever pace the brief and the building demand. Nothing is built before it has been modelled, and nothing is signed off before it has been measured.
Find out who will use the room, how, and what they expect from it.
RIBA 0 / 1Strategic Definition / Briefing
Define the performance in numbers and shape how it looks. Start with the room itself.
RIBA 2Concept Design
Make sure it works on paper first. Standards ensure consistency of experience.
RIBA 3 / 4Spatial Coordination
Pick the products that meet the engineering, not the other way round.
RIBA 3 / 4Technical Design
Follow best practice, with minimal guesswork or improvising on site.
RIBA 5Construction
Not an auto-magic button. It takes expertise, experience and time.
RIBA 5 / 6Construction / Handover
Measure the finished room. Did we deliver what we promised?
RIBA 6 / 7Handover / Use
Promised objectively at the start. Proven objectively at the end.
Foundry is our private demonstration studio, and the one place our work can be experienced before a single decision is made. It is a fully engineered reference cinema, built to the same standard we hold every commission to, so you can judge the result with your own eyes and ears rather than a portfolio you're asked to take on trust.
Most of our work is under NDA, and we publish a project only with the client's express permission. Serious clients experience the rest in person, at Foundry.
The awards our principals have won, the projects that won them, and the roles we hold at CEDIA, the industry body behind the standards and recommended practices we design to. Projects are named only where the client has given permission.

"Our clients value their privacy, and so do we. You won't find most of their rooms online. You'll find the same standard we hold every project to, and an open invitation to hear it for yourself."

Why the noise floor sets the usable dynamic range of a private cinema, and how structural isolation, quiet HVAC and NCB noise criteria turn silence into a design material.
